The Montessori method of teaching children between the ages of 2.5 and 6 was
developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago. She began by
patiently observing children in various learning environments, in many
different cultures and countries for twenty years. Based on her
observations, she created specific learning tools that were attractive and
interesting to the children so that they wanted to use them. Each item was
designed with a different purpose to aid in the child's understanding of a
certain concept. Dr. Montessori's style of teaching is now worldwide.
Despite the changing world around us, the needs of the child have not
changed. She has proven time again that children learn by copying and by
doing for themselves. In a Montessori classroom, you will see the teacher
quietly showing a child how to use the materials and, then, the child
repeating the activity. The child is welcome and encouraged to choose
that activity as often as he/she likes. As movement is an important part of
a child's development, you will see children walking around at free will,
making their own choices of the materials they have been shown how to do.
The Montessori method is a three year program, with the child growing and
developing into the next level. There are age appropriate activities for each child. It is the teacher's responsibility to observe the children and make note of their choices, make note of how well the child can grasp each concept, and make note of when the child is ready for the next step.

Six Areas of Development
The Montessori classroom is divided into six areas: practical life,
sensorial, language, math, culture and physical. At the Playtrium Montessori World,
we also incorporate the physical development of the child by using the
Playtrium's indoor climbing gym on a daily basis. Click on the 'word' you would like more information on...
